Vienna City Card

Discover the benefits of the Vienna Card, the tourist card that will make you love the Viennese capital with discounts on attractions, bars, shops and transport.

The Vienna City Card (often shortened to Vienna Card) is the only official tourist card of the city of Vienna. It allows free and unlimited use of public transport (metro, tram and bus), discounted admission to more than 200 attractions as well as discounts in bars, restaurants and shops. It is ideal for those who want to enjoy the Viennese capital without stress and at the same time save money.

Together with your card, you will receive a brochure with an up-to-date list of included attractions and all discounts, with which you can plan your itinerary day by day and keep your spending under control.

Is it worth buying the Vienna City Card?

Vienna’s prices are in the average range of other European capitals, but unfortunately many of the most famous attractions have rather expensive entrance fees. If you plan to visit even just two or three of them, the cost of your holiday could rise considerably.

It would be a shame to miss out on the city’s splendid palaces or prestigious museums, which is why it is recommended to buy the Vienna Card, with which you can save money on entrance fees. Of course, the more attractions you visit, the more you save: you can save up to 100 euros in three days!

Another advantage of having the Vienna Card in your pocket during your holiday is that you can get on and off public transport as often as you like. You don’t have to decide in advance which and how many means of transport you will use to work out which ticket or season ticket to buy: with the Vienna Card you only open your wallet once and don’t think about it any more!

Types and versions

The classic Vienna Card exists in three versions: 24, 48 or 72 hours.

If you prefer sightseeing buses to public transport, choose the new Vienna Card with hop-on hop-off bus. This card includes all the discounts of the classic Vienna Card but replaces the use of public transport with a 24-hour ticket on the blue and red buses of the Big Bus Vienna company and a free guided walking tour.

The Vienna Card with hop on hop off bus also exists in 24, 48 or 72-hour versions, but regardless of which version you choose, the bus ticket is only valid for 24 hours.

Transport

Depending on the type of card you choose, you will haveunlimited use of public transport or a free hop on hop off tourist bus ticket.

In the first case, you can travel for free for 24, 48 or 72 hours after validation; in the second case, you can use the tourist bus for 24 hours. In both cases, a child up to 15 years of age travels free with the ticket holder.

Buses and trains to/from Vienna Airport are not included, but a discount is available.

Bars and restaurants

Eating out is one of the biggest items of expenditure on a holiday budget. Here, too, the Vienna Card comes to your aid: there are more than 30 selected bars and restaurants where you can enjoy a discount or a free drink.

The choice is vast: traditional taverns, elegant cafés, trendy or luxury restaurants, there is something for every taste and budget!

Shops

Vienna is an exciting city for shoppers: if you are one of them, Vienna Card will help you unleash your passion. Discounts await you in some of the city’s best shops for clothing, leather goods, designer items, souvenirs, gourmet delicacies, handicrafts and much more.

Shows

Music is an indispensable part of the Viennese identity: you cannot leave the city without attending at least one concert.

Enjoy it even more by saving on your ticket: Vienna Card offers discounts for classical music concerts at prestigious venues such as the Konzerthaus or Schönbrunn Palace, as well as jazz cafés and modern live music venues.

Sport and leisure

Vienna Card is also suitable for active holidaymakers: the card entitles you to discounts for sports activities and equipment rental. For example, you can rent a boat for a trip on the Danube or go ice-skating on one of Vienna’s famous and atmospheric ice rinks.

How the Vienna Card works

The Vienna Card is very easy to use. Buy it online, before you leave, so you already have your booking voucher with you.

You will then need to exchange it for the official card at one of the pick-up locations, such as the Vienna Tourist Information Centre on Albertinaplatz (corner of Maysedergasse), at the main railway station or at the airport in the arrivals hall.

To take advantage of discounts, show your card at the ticket offices of museums and attractions; to travel on public transport, simply validate your card on your first journey.

The Vienna Card must be used within 65 days of purchase – enough time not to throw money away if your holiday plans change at the last minute!

Vienna Pass

As already mentioned, the Vienna City Card provides unlimited use of public transport, but for entrance to monuments and museums there is only a discount on the entrance fee.

You might find it useful to know that there is also the Vienna Pass, a card that includesfree entry to over 60 attractions, including Schönbrunn Palace, the Prater Ferris Wheel, the Spanish Riding School, the Albertina Museum and many others.

It could then be coupled with the Vienna City Card to have both all major attractions and public transport fully included.
